Top AI Skills to Learn - Introduction to Data Science (Basic)


In today's era of Information, ‘Data’ is the new driving force, provided we know how to extract relevant ‘Intelligence’.

This course will cover the basic principles of Data Science, and will equip the participants with the standard tools and techniques of data wrangling, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, data-based inference, and data-focused communication. The mode of training is primarily through hands-on exercises, coupled with intermittent instructive sessions on theoretical foundations of Data Science and Machine Learning. Python will be the language of choice to introduce Data Science techniques using standard libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-Learn, Seaborn and Plotly.

To equip the participants with basic concepts of data handling, exploration, visualization, analysis, and inference. The course covers basics of data wrangling and exploratory analysis in Pandas, basics of data visualization in Seaborn and Plotly, fundamentals of machine learning (mainly regression and classification) using Scikit-Learn, and concepts of data-based inference and presentation. Participants will get hands-on experience in each of these modules, for active learning.

By the end of this course, the participants should be able to identify and define data-oriented problems and data-driven decisions in real life, discuss the problems in terms of data exploration and visualization, apply basic machine learning tools to extract inferential information from data, and compose an engaging “data-story” to communicate the case.

Dr Sourav SEN GUPTA is a Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. He has taught various undergraduate and graduate level courses in Data Science and Computing over the last five years, and has designed Data Science courses for the Digital Literacy program at NTU.
