BS1008 Biostatistics
Objectives
This course aims to provide an overview of the importance of biostatistics in the scientific design of experiments and in the data collection processing, analysis and interpretation of the life sciences. Students will learn the basic theory, computational skills, and applications of statistics in biology.
Outline
a) The importance of biostatistics in the conduct of biological experiments
b) Data and graphs (pie, scatter, histogram, and bar charts), tables of data
c) Basic statistics concepts (mean, standard deviation)
d) Probability distribution and estimation (normal & how to compute probability)
e) Binomial distribution (formulas and calculation)
f) Poisson Distribution (formulas, calculation and relationship with binomial)
g) Hypothesis testing (z-test and t-test)
h) ANOVA (test for more than two groups) and correlation/regression
i) Non-parametric methods (methods for categorical and ranked data)
Who Should Attend
Data Scientist or Reasearchers working in academia and the local biotech industry
Eligibility Criteria
Diploma/Degree in Biological Sciences and equivalent with 2 years of related working experience.
